Site Launch: Good Medical Practice in Action

Lightmaker was chosen to redevelop the General Medical Council’s (GMC) Good Medical Practice in Action (GMPiA) website. The GMC’s interactive case studies needed updating to reflect the new duties outlined in its Good medical practice 2013 guide for doctors.

The GMPiA website features a series of interactive case studies with different patient types and medical complaints. The aim is for doctors to test their knowledge of the GMC’s ethical guidance to understand how it applies in common situations.

The original website was built in Flash. This restricted the GMC’s ability to update content and limited audience numbers as tablet and mobile usage increased.

Lightmaker’s objectives were to improve the overall user experience, provide quick access to the case studies from the homepage and to increase engagement with the content. The site also needed to adapt to the ever increasing number of devices that doctors used to access the site.

Launched in April 2013, the new site was built utilising HTML5 technologies that allows the site to be fully responsive, scaling up and down to suit all devices.

Doctors can browse the new GMPiA by guidance, topic or patient type/character. The new interactive case studies bring to life the GMC’s ethical guidance: doctors answer questions on each scenario and receive feedback on their answers.

The new website also allows the GMC to edit copy and imagery in-house. Other improvements to the user experience include better linking between the case studies and with other GMC guidance and learning materials for doctors.
