Accessibility
At Lightmaker we are committed to making our work accessible to all. Through close work with organisations like the RNIB and RNID, we strive to deliver outstanding sites that everyone can enjoy.
Beyond compliance
We know that accessibility is more than just a green tick in the compliance box. And while we do make our websites to industry standards, we also think way beyond this to make the user experience engaging, useful and relevant for any user.
Beyond boundaries
Way back when Flash was frowned upon as a viable method of delivering accessible content, Lightmaker proved to the world that in fact the opposite is true. Through thoughtful creation of the experience and information accessible users need, we made Flash a more accessible option than regular HTML – a first in the industry.
In 2005 we relaunched J.K.Rowling’s full Flash website to be completely accessible. Lightmaker were the first to bring subtle browsing techniques like Progressive Disclosure to the Flash arena to much acclaim and subsequent series of awards.
Even video
Our Give and Let Live campaign for long-time client the National Blood Service features accessible Flash video, incorporating Closed Captions for users with hearing problems. The basic but often overlooked and essential option to mute the audio is also included, allowing users that rely on screen reader technology to not have two soundtracks overlapping each other.
Awards for our accessible work
Our work on theĀ NBS Virtual Session application won various awards with the highlight being Adobe’s Site of the Day. Have a play for yourself and see how seamless and logical the keyboard navigation is throughout the whole tour.
